It’s been a strange week in the music world: Kanye’s back tweeting a world of shite, Avicii died at the harrowingly early age of 28, Record Store Day came and cleared out my savings, we celebrated our very first birthday and it’s been two years since the death of Prince. Despite the remarkably bittersweet period, seasoned regulars Elliot, Rhys and Tom are back with some bangers, putting in the spadework for a bumper edition of Songs We Like. Expect summertime groovers, gloomy ragers and everything in between.

 

Big Bite – Relentless Healing

 

 

POP WIG continue to expand their repertoire of insatiably great hardcore punk treats. Dropping their self-titled debut this summer is Big Bite, whose Seattle roots govern much of their grunge-soaked wall breaking sound. ‘Relentless Healing’ brings the feedback and a twanging guitars-only outro for some extra flavour to more regular punk outings, and it’s a refreshing take on a genre that is absolutely killing it right now. Plus, there’s no yelling to put off the slugs that can’t appreciate the punk aesthetic. Light up that barbecue and mosh the fuck out. -Elliot

 

Black Moth Super Rainbow – Backwash

 

 

In what can only be described as a heavily reverbed doo-wop version of the Napoleon Dynamite soundtrack is the latest single from experimental synth-drenched poppy electronica act Black Moth Super Rainbow. That was all a bit of a mouthful, but this chiller is quite the opposite: simplistic, stunning and so damn soothing. Matched with the excellent single ‘Mr No One’, ‘Panic Blooms’ is shaping up to be one of 2018’s most anticipated releases. Also, what the hell is going on in that video? -Elliot

 

Bury Tomorrow – Black Flame

 

 

The delicate, tinkling finger tapping of Kristan Dawson is exactly the welcome that metalcore fans wanted from Bury Tomorrow’s long-awaited fifth LP, ‘Black Flame’. What? A July 13th release date? Stop teasing us, lads, the wait has been excruciating enough. BT have time and time again cemented themselves at the top of the UK metal pile, with Dawson’s shredding reaching new peaks, and their delivery getting only more crushing. The bellowing choruses of Jason Cameron are one of the genre’s highlights, akin to Howard Jones of Killswitch fame (he’s coming back?!), so ‘Black Flame’ really can’t come to metalheads soon enough. Yes, he’s that good. -Elliot

 

Deafheaven – Honeycomb

 

 

To clear up any confusion, I am indeed on the fan side of Deafheaven. I’m certainly no black metal purist that’s enamoured by raw, sketchy production and corpse paint, but taking the very best elements of an interesting genre (BLASTBEATS) and seamlessly weaving them into a shoegazey landscape really has created a phenomenal sound for metal fans, alt rock fans, or the labelled ‘hipsters’, to enjoy as one. The hipster thing really does get overdone for these guys, unfortunately, but this 11-minute ripper from their latest effort since ‘New Bermuda’ brings everything you’d want from Deafheaven with some added rock n’ roll swagger. Plus, that outro is just gorgeous, straight out of Billy Corgan’s ‘Siamese Dream’ playlist, and a contender for musical moment of the year already. -Elliot

 

Father John Misty – Disappointing Diamonds Are The Rarest Of Them All

 

 

Sardonic overlord Father John Misty is back with a new LP, the brilliantly titled Gods Favourite Customer, an album supposedly mirroring I Love You, Honeybear albeit ‘without the cynicism’. Although I hold my doubts about the lacking cynicism, I sure as fuck love Father John Misty when he ramps up the gleeful sounding, larger-than-life songwriting. Boasting witticisms like, ‘Does everybody have to be the greatest story ever told?’, ‘Disappointing Diamonds Are The Rarest Of Them All’ has our loveable rogue spitting his own brand of intellectual cynicisms over a loose instrumental that threatens to drown FJM out. I told you I had my doubts. -Tom

 

Janelle Monae – I Like That

 

 

The Monae hype train is back, baby. Don’t think for one second it ever left. Seemingly determined to showcase as many different genres as humanly possible in the runup to forthcoming LP Dirty Computer, Janelle Monae is back with a blast of summery soul over a rattling percussive beat. Do I get vibes of ‘That Power’ from the criminally underrated Camp by Childish Gambino? A little. Monae also takes spoken word storytelling about her younger years into ‘I Like That’, although it’s impossible to argue her story is anything but empowering. Harking back to the refrain from the largely forgotten ‘Do Ya Thing’ collab between James Murphy, Gorillaz and Andre 3000, both tracks end with assertions that they are, in fact, ‘the shit’. Janelle Monae is certainly the shit, and you’re a fool if you argue otherwise. -Tom

 

Machinedrum – Hype Up

 

 

A lot of people don’t like new Machinedrum. A lot of people don’t like future bass. This is a new Machinedrum track that sounds a lot like future bass, and it’s a giddy segment of summer fun that utilises a shimmering sonic palette that funks and pops in your ears. Don’t let snobs tell you music has to be a particular elitist genre for it to be enjoyable. -Tom

 

Mitski & Xiu Xiu – Between The Breaths

 

 

If ever there was guaranteed fodder that I’d find irresistible, it’d be a pairing between Mitski and Xiu Xiu. Well, the combination I never knew I needed (but always hoped would happen) is here in the form of a track from upcoming comedy/sci-fi film How To Talk To Girls At Parties. It’s the kind of cathartic build you’d expect from a soundtrack, building on a gloomy and muffled instrumental that blossoms into an overblown release. Mitski sounds fantastic, Xiu Xiu sound fantastic, what more do you want? -Tom

 

Polymod ft. Nanook – TX

 

 

Got that dull pain in your stomach that can only be satisfied by a filthy acid heater? Suffer no more friend, Polymod will sort you out. Don’t be fooled by the relatively calm intro, this thing bangs. –Rhys

 

Prince – Nothing Compares 2 U

 

 

I’m not sure whether you’d believe me, but I adore Sinead O’Connor’s version of ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’. I’ve also watched various live recordings of Prince singing his original version of the track numerous times, and it’s clear that both versions are monumental recordings with their own merits. On the second anniversary of Prince’s death, we’ve been blessed with an original studio recording of Prince’s ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ for the first time, and it’s every bit as magnificent as the man himself. -Tom

 

State Champs – Dead and Gone

 

 

Everyone in the UK has enjoyed a few days of premature summer, and maybe that’s the reason why State Champs – royalty of modern pop punk – have dropped this year’s catchiest track to prolong the sunshine for when it will duly disappear for another two months. Plus, it was co-written by none of other than King Mark Hoppus of Blink-182 fame. Pop punk’s heavyweights unite! And that… that is why this will likely go down as a genre gem in only a few years time. -Elliot

 

Wolfgang Tillmans – Source (Roman Flugel 909 Mix)

 

 

From a photographer’s perspective, Wolfgang Tillmans is a great artist that deserves all the positive praise he can get. His music however, is not of the same high standard. ‘Device Control’, the 2016 track that got a great response after it featured in Frank Ocean’s visual album was, in my book, a bit rubbish. Tillmans actually has a track named ‘Tired Car Alarm’, which – you’ve guessed it – is just the sound of a dying car alarm… for two minutes. That’s just silly, and not in a fun way. In this track however, Roman Flugel has tamed Tillmans strange musical experiments into a melodic groover that I actually like. Thank you Roman. -Rhys
