I’m rarely starstruck but after snagging a very quick and unexpected interview with soul and jazz songstress Lalah Hathaway after her performance at Love Supreme Jazz, I certainly was. Having been an enormous fan of her father Donny Hathaway since my teenage years and having become an equally big fan of Lalah Hathaway, this was a momentous occasion. Here’s our quick chat about live gigs, short films and touring that we had whilst Ms Hathaway relaxed in the passenger seat of her tour bus.
SL: Hi Lalah, thanks for speaking to me!
LH: I really appreciate you coming over here.
No problem, my pleasure. So I’m here at Love Supreme with the wonderful Lalah Hathaway who has just released her new album.
New album. It’s the deluxe edition of an album I released in November called honestly.
So there’s a regular version?
Yeah so there’s a regular version and then I released the deluxe edition two days ago which has 6 additional track and a feature with Red Man
So who else features?
Robert Glasper they did some remixes, Twilite Tone.
Is this all new material or is it remixes?
No, so some of it is remixed and we have Red Man on one of the ballads. He was on Instagram talking about how much he loved me and loved the record and I love him too, I’m a big fan. So I hit him up and said come on get on my record and he did.
Love it. Let’s talk gigs. So there’s a new album so are we expecting a new tour?
Yea I’m on tour at the moment. I’m going to Dublin tomorrow then Sofia, Bulgaria. I’m getting around.
You’re busy! Super Busy!
Yea so busy! I’m getting around.
Does that mean Another live album? We haven’t heard one for a while!
I hope so. I would live I make a live album every couple of years.
I hope you do, it’s my favourite album.
Ah, thank you.
So everyone can buy tickets online?
Yes, let’s talk about that actually, so it’s your first short film?
It’s my first short film!
So did you write it, direct it?
I kind of worked with the team and conceptualised it and worked with the director Jay Ahn, the whole concept is my concept. it’s sort of a visual accompaniment to the record.
Does that mean you’re going to go on to make longer films?
We both laugh
Do a Beyoncé?
I think that’s so cool. I love it when people involve the visual and it’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time and I’m just getting into it now.
That’s so exciting!
It is! I’m really excited.
How have you found Love Supreme, have you seen any other acts?
I went and sat in with Mr Jukes and I wanted to see my friend Dave and his band Drumheadz but we just got here and it was so bleepin hot.
Stay in the air con.
I swear, I’ve never been in this country when it’s been so hot.
Thanks so much Lalah.
Thank you! I really appreciate it and I appreciate your energy during the gig!
