Songs We Like - 7/10/2018

We’re back at it again with another fresh helping of the best new music around. What better way could there be to end the week?

Anderson .Paak & Kendrick Lamar – TINTS

When you get some of that luscious funk that Anderson .Paak conducts so well, and place a fittingly laidback verse from Compton’s prodigal son, it’s a mixture that’ll bring some much needed Cali sunshine to the breezy start of autumnal Britain, and it’s the collaboration that I think we all knew we needed. -Elliot

Broken Social Scene – Old Dead Young

There’s no doubt that Broken Social Scene have been more than influential to the indie rock scene – Kevin Drew’s collective have long since permeated the minds of angsty teens since 2012 . What’s perhaps more surprising is the vigour that Broken Social Scene provided on comeback album Hug Of Thunder, and how good even an offcut from such a record sounds. -Tom

Architects – Royal Beggars

Holy Hell’ can’t come soon enough. Here’s another perfectly balanced ferocious track from Brighton’s finest, and with Sam Carter’s most emotionally-straining vocal performance to date, it’s hard to tell just what limits these guys set themselves. Fans of old: there’s a “blegh”, fans of the new: thank for joining us. Where have you been? It’s been a meteoric rise, and counting. -Elliot

Can’t Swim – My Queen

Already following up from one of last year’s strongest records from the Pure Noise roster is Chris LaPorto’s Can’t Swim project who, with upcoming release ‘This Too Won’t Pass’, sound wonderfully downbeat. Lead emo-tinger single ‘My Queen’ sees a distancing from the more garage-rock production to a fiercely polished track; trademark gravel in LaPorto’s voice, catchiness aplenty in the chorus and backing vocals, and a pissed-off hardcore inspired outro culminate to something amongst their most well-crafted creations. – Elliot

The Spirit Of The Beehive – Fell Asleep With A Vision

The recently released Hypnic Jerks by The Spirit Of The Beehive is a rough but seemingly overlooked gem in the indie sphere. It may be short, but ‘fell asleep with a vision’ is a frenetic pulse of energy, a defibrillating zap in comparison to the easygoing-fuzz of the first two tracks of the album. The track itself is sandwiched between this sinister drone, making it’s short-lived but memorable duration feel like a fever dream. -Stevie
